Cathedral and Diocesan Museum

Important art treasures from more than 1000 years of history of the archbishopric of Mainz are to be seen in the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum. The unique exhibits from the cathedral and the churches of the diocese are shown in the historical surroundings of the late-Gothic cloister of Mainz cathedral. World-famous early Gothic sculptures are to be seen in the vaulted hall dating from the Hohenstaufen period.

These include the figures of the "blessed" and the "damned" from the former western rood screen. The expressive "Head with the bandage" still has its original application of paint. The rood screen was produced around 1240 by the renowned Master of Naumburg and his workshop. The richly colored and ornate Ottonian book illuminations as weil as the late Gothic tapestries with their brilliant colours and vivid portrayal of figures are among the best known treasures of the Cathedral Museum.
