The Landesmuseum is one of Germany's oldest museums. Art and cultural history collections from prehistoric and early historical periods down to the present are shown here in the Golden Horse Barracks, the former Electoral Stables. Roman stone monuments are to be seen in the imposing Stone Hall. Paintings, seulptures and a great number of eraft work items are to be found in the departments Roman Rhine Bridge, Middle Ages, Baroque, 19th and 20th Centuries. Further highlights: The Netherlanders-Paintings, the collections of exceptionally beautiful, rare art nouveau glass and Hoechst porcelain.

With approximately 45,000 aquarelles, drawings and prints, the largest graphie eolleetion in Rhineland-Palatinate is also to be found in the Museum. The journey in time, through the culture of past days, ends here and today: In topical alternating exhibitions, both contemporary art and the art of past epochs is shown in all conceivable varieties and forms of expression.

Kelti, who himself dates from the 2nd century before Christ, explains the backgrounds of the exhibits in easily understandable language, and invites the children to take part in interactive games. It is even possible for children set up their own exhibition under www.kids.landesmuseum-mainz.de. In addition, lectures, guided tours as weil as further events for children and young people take place every week. Special guided tours and guided tours for school c1asses are given by arrangement.
