Museum Castellum

Since 1990, the Society for Local History has presented findings from early history and in particular from the Roman period behind the thick wall of the Reduit fortress, in the immediate vicinity of the Mainz-Kastel bridgehead.

Terracotta vessels, tiles, elements of the ancient aqueduct, the reconstruction of a hot spring, but also tableware made of Terra Sigilatta tell of everyday life in Castellum Mogontiacum. Particularly valuable are parts of a collection of coins found in Kastel in 1962, a set of surgical instruments and jewellery. Several sacrificial altars, sarcophagi and urns, above all the Kastel Aedicule, an outstanding work of sculpture, give evidence of cult and religion in antiquity.

Customs and history over the centuries down to the present are reflected in the exhibitions which are devoted to the Carnival, the fortress period and various centers of economic life.
