Medieval monuments and diverse museums offer some of Freiburg's most interesting cultural highlights.

Freiburg's most important cultural monument is the Münster (Cathedral). Begun in 1200 in Romanesque style (transept) and completed in 1513, the Münster exhibits primarily Gothic stylistic elements. The sculpted figures and stained-glass windows are impressive testimony to the plasticity and expressiveness of medieval art. One of the highlights is the high altar in the chancel by Hans Baldung Grien (1512-16).

Housed in the Augustiner Museum are precious treasures from the Middle Ages to the present day. Collections include paintings by Hans Baldung Grien, Matthias Grünewald and Lucas Cranach, as well as original sculpture and stained-glass windows from the Cathedral, to mention but a few. The folklore section displays regional costumes, a clock collection and folk art of the Black Forest.

The Museum für Neue Kunst exhibits works of the 20th century by Arp, Baumeister, Dix, Heckel, Hofer, Macke and other protagonists of modern art.

The displays of the Museum of Ethnology invite us on a "stroll" around the world and down through the ages. In the Museum of Prehistory and Early History the visitor encounters the beginnings of human habitation between Upper and High Rhine - Celts, Romans, Franks and Alemanni.

Additional attractions: the Tin Figure Museum, Carnival Museum and Stucco Museum.

Besides the "Theater Freiburg" which stages everything from classics to modern drama in many a novel production, Freiburg is especially renowned for its performance art. Cabaretists, jugglers, acrobats, clownery and political satire guarantee a rich and varied program. And as "Music City," Freiburg has something for every music lover - from Classical to Rock.
