Freiburg was founded by the Dukes of Zähringen in 1120, and the layout of streets and squares of the rapidly prospering metropolis is still impressively reflected in today’s cityscape. In 1368 Freiburg came under the Habsburgs – remaining, with but brief interruptions, the capital of Austria’s Vorderösterreich until the beginning of the 19th century.

The medieval Old Quarter with its architectural treasures, colorful marketplace, twisting narrow lanes and little “waterways” running through the streets picturesquely circles the magnificent Gothic Cathedral. Its unique 381-foot-high tower ranks among the masterworks of Gothic architecture, enhancing Freiburg’s incomparable silhouette. It took over 300 years to build this Gothic masterpiece, which was completed in 1513, which takes pride of place as Freiburg's main landmark. The highlights of the lavish interior are its high altar and wonderful stained glass.

If you have the guts to climb the Cathedral tower, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. And even there, at those lofty heights, the enchanting ambiance of this old university town is palpable. The historic Old Town with numerous historical monuments, museums, theaters, and areas with cozy restaurants and quaint bars all contribute to making this city so popular among students and visitors alike.

In Freiburg, you encounter historic sights at each corner. The Cathedral Square is surrounded by impressive buildings, the tallest of which is the steep-roofed historical Kaufhaus or Old Merchants’ House with its colorfully adorned bartizans. Sights worth visiting include the Old and New Town Halls, the House of the Whale (Haus zum Walfisch), with its superb late Gothic portal, the Basle Court (Basler Hof) and the two medieval city gates (Martinstor and Schwabentor), which still stand to this day.

The most picturesque views of the Old Quarter can be enjoyed in the Schwabentor Gate and "Island” areas. Miniature streams flow through the streets and alleyways, contributing to the city's unique appearance.

Freiburg today – a cheerful little big city with southern flair and a charming mix of tradition and progress. The location of the cosmopolitan university town is unmatched: right at the foot of the Black Forest, in the midst of the “three-country corner” where Germany, France and Switzerland touch. With the Vosges and the Alps close by. With a climate like that of Lugano. With a renowned mineral thermal bath and spa resort. And with all the things that make for unspoiled quality of life.

Freiburg is also the gateway to the High Black Forest. Also nearby are the vineyard and wine villages of the Margrave, Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg regions.
