Arnstadt

Arnstadt records date from as far back as 704, making it the oldest town in Thuringia.

The main attractions are the palace museum's "Mon plaisir"; collection of old dolls and marionettes and the Bach Church where Johann Sebastian Bach was organist from 1703 to 1707.  A Bach memorial site and a room devoted to literary figures have been integrated into the Museum of Local History. 

The Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), the town hall (Rathaus), Riedplatz Square and the patrician townhouses on the market square are all well worth seeing.
