The two magnificent neighboring merchant houses from the 18th century with their almost palatial character are nowadays home to Lübeck's art collections from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Behnhaus, with the largest and most impressive hall in Lübeck and the rooms in its wing building in the style of Classicism, is considered one of the most beautiful merchant houses in Northern Germany. The Drägerhaus features the only remaining 18th-century festival suite in Lübeck.
The main exhibits of the collection of paintings are the works of Johann Friedrich Overbeck und Gotthard Kuehl, paintings from Romanticism among others of Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen, Carl Gustav Carus and works of Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt, Lovis Corinth and Edvard Munch.
