Every year the Christmas fairs in Lübeck delight visitors with their enchanting settings. The most popular one is the fair inside the Hospital of the Holy Spirit.
Other attractions are the Craftsmen's Christmas Fair in St. Peter's Church and the traditional fairs on the Market Square, along Breite Straße and around the Koberg. The traditional Lübeck Christmas fair, which was mentioned for the first time in 1648, takes place near the Town Hall, decorated with fir trees. Strolling around the fair with a cup of spiced wine, you have the possibility to buy toys and Christmas decorations, gingerbread and many other items.
At the foot of St. Mary's Church, the Christmas Fairy Tale Forest displays more than 20 showpieces from famous fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. There's also a merry-go-round and a mini-train for children.
The decorated church hall of the Holy Ghost Hospice (Heiligen-Geist-Hospital), with its vaulted ceilings and lovely murals, provides a delightful medieval ambiance for the Christmas market. Visitors can find beautiful hand-made gifts made out of ceramics, wood, glass, wool, silk, leather, gold and silver. You can find dolls, puppets, hand-weaved baskets, books as well. Exhibitors come from all over Germany and northern Europe.
Crafts also take center stage at the Lübeck Craftsmen Christmas Fair at St. Peter's Church where 3 craftspeople present ceramics, woollens, leather goods, paintings and toys. Of course, Christmas in Lübeck wouldn't be complete without visiting the Christmas Bazaar at Niederegger's where you can nibble on delicious pyramid cake, a piece of currant cake, chocolates and Lübecker marzipan.
