Münster's excellent network of bicycle paths and routes has provided a model for cities around the world. Few cities, even in bicycle-friendly Germany, benefit from such an extensive infrastructure for cyclists.
For example, the "Promenade," a tree-lined "green" ring encircling the city center, is used exclusively by cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists have their own traffic-lights and enjoy special privileges on the roads. The network of cycle paths allows safe and speedy progress.Cyclists even have extensive cycle-parking facilities at their disposal. Germany's first bicycle parking garage is to be found directly in front of the main railway station: a bike station with more than 3,500 parking slots, a repair service, a rent-a-bike office and even a bicycle wash.
For the citizens of Münster - grandmothers doing their city shopping, students going to class, commuters heading to work - bicycles are constant and true companions. Whether in street wear or dressed up, wearing a loden coat or a denim jacket - almost everybody in Münster uses muscle power to get from Point A to Point B. Many places in the city are perfect for spontaneous or extended relaxation breaks. Consider a trip around the Promenade, for instance, or a cycle ride to the botanical gardens, the all-weather zoo or the lakeside Aasee. It's just a short distance to the well- interlinked system of the Münsterland park landscape, including the popular 100 Castle Route.
