Münster's tradition of hosting conferences and congresses is more than 350 years old. As early as 1643, the then 10,000 citizens of the city had to prepare themselves to accommodate a total of 8,000 guests. Diplomats, together with the courts of the entire European ruling houses, came together here to confer on the end of the Thirty Years War. They were to remain more than four years: until the signing of the treaties concerning the "Westphalian Peace" in the year 1648.
