Potsdam's cultural life is reflected in numerous art collections and galleries, some of which are stylishly accommodated in Potsdam palaces where special exhibitions are also presented. The private galleries also have much to offer.
Devotées of drama, opera, operetta and concerts flock to the Kleines Theater and, naturally, the Baroque Schlosstheater. For political cabaret and satire, the "Kabarett am Obelisk" is the spot.
The Schiffbauergasse is where Potsdam sees the future integration of culture and business. In addition to the children's and youth theatre of Hans-Otto-Theatre, various clubs and sponsors are already now to offering here a wide variety of dance, music, contemporary performances and fine arts.
Culture in Potsdam, however, also means cinematic art. On the Studio lots in Potsdam-Babelsberg, the great era of the Ufa Studios comes to life. A visit to the prop room, which has made the Guinness Book of Records, is simultaneously a flashback excursion to the stylistic epochs of several centuries. The special attraction, however, is that here the visitor gets a closeup look at cinema "live." Featured are special programs with a stunt show, a behind-the-scenes glance at the makeup studio including personal makeup demonstration, and "directing" a film against the background of an Old Berlin shopping street. For those interested in motion picture history, the Film Museum in the Marstall is a true treasure trove.
Technology buffs are fascinated by the Dampfmaschinenhaus, built in the style of a moorish mosque, which sends water spurting through fountains in Sanssouci Park.
