The Perpetual Imperial Assembly of Regensburg, Germany's oldest parliament, convened in the Historic Imperial Chamber from 1663 till 1806.
The Perpetual Imperial Assembly of Regensburg, Germany's oldest parliament, convened in the Historic Imperial Chamber from 1663 till 1806. During this time, the ambassadors from the German and European royal courts made homes for themselves in the city, and founded a varied culture of festivals and celebrations.
The buildings were used originally as the town hall of Regensburg and occasionally for meetings of the Imperial Diet, from 1663 as the seat of the Perpetual Imperial diet. Today visitors are shown the meeting room of the city council, which later became the prince-electors-meeting room, the ballroom, which later became the Imperial Hall, as well as the places where the princes and the representatives of the Free Imperial Cities met.
In two rooms an exhibition of books and prints illustrates the history of the Imperial Diet. The dungeons and inquisition chamber in the cellars are also on show.
Not all rooms are always open to the public, since the Old Town Hall is used for weddings, receptions and festive occasions.
