Hikes in and Around Trier


Trier as well as the Mosel, Eifel and Hunsrück Mountains offer lovely trails and walking tours: archaeology trails, barefoot paths, or tree maze tours. You can explore these paths alone or take part in an organized tour.

 
WALKING TRAILS

Saar-Hunsrück Climb

Local Recreation Area Weisshaus Forest Trier
Information: Tourist Information Trier
Nine Trier walking trails (T-trails) meander through the 6,005 acres/2,430 ha of forest. They form a length of 22.8 mi/38 km and lead through the variously administrated forest areas outside the city (Weisshaus, Hospital, Pfalzel, Kordel, State and Zewen Forests). A trail map is located at the parking area Weisshausbrunnen.


Stefan Andres Walking Trail Schweich-Leiwen

This trail follows the footsteps of the poet and author Stefan Andres from Schweich to Leiwen.


Mosel Heights Trail

The Mosel Heights Trail runs along the heights above the Mosel between Perl and Coblenz. The Tourist Informations in the various sections of the Mosel Heights Trail have topographical hiking maps from the State Survey Office.


Pilgrims' Road Santiago de Compostela - Route Trier-Perl

According to tradition, the Apostle James the Elder, a close friend of Jesus, was given the task of preaching the Christian faith in Spain. His tomb in Santiago de Compostela became the goal of thousands of pilgrims from all over Europe. The pilgrims' road in the Holiday Region Trier leads from the Vereinigten Hospitien in Trier along the old Roman Road Trier-Metz via Konz, Tawern, Mannebach, Fisch, Körrig, Merzkirchen and Borg to Perl.


Archaeology Information Trail
Information: Ferienregion Trierer Land e.V.
The trail encompasses the romantic Butzerbach Valley with its suspension bridges and waterfalls as well as the cultural monuments of settlement going back 2500 years: Ramstein Castle ruin, Geiersley (rock formation), Genovevahöhle (cave), Hochburg (ruins), Klausenhöhle (hermit's cave), Roman Long Wall, Roman copper mine ("Pützlöcher") and quarry. You may choose from different routes; uniform sign posting; free leaflet.


Adventure Trail Water and Nature

Adventure trail in the Nature Park Südeifel through the Prüm Valley between Irrel and Holsthum.


Ausonius Road - Roman Road Bingen-Trier
Information: Hunsrück-Touristik GmbH
In A.D. 368, the famous Roman scholar Decimus Magnus Ausonius travelled to Emperor Valentian I on the old Roman road across the Hunsrück Mountains from Bingen to Trier. He wrote down his impressions during his journey in the well-known work "Mosella". The Ausonius Road runs from Bingen via Rheinböllen, Simmern, Kirchberg, Sohren, Morbach, Gräfendhron and Mertesdorf to Trier.

WALKS IN TRIER
Suggestions for Walks

  • Zurlaubener Ufer (on the river at Zurlauben) across the Mosel via the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge to the Weisshaus on the mountain; continuation on to hiking map at the Weisshaus Forest  parking area; from there, 5 marked hiking trails for hikes lasting 45 minutes to 3 hours.
  • Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge - Rose Garden - game preserve - Weisshaus Forest - cliff trail to Biewer, possibly to Pfalzel; return to city centre, bus No. 7/87 or boat from the Klosterschenke in Pfalzel to the city dock at Zurlauben at the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge (boat operating hours: May-October, afternoons only). Hike about 1 to 2 hours, boat trip 30 minutes.
  • Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge - St. Mary's Column (1,000 ft/300 m above sea level) - Markusberg
    Mountain (1,100 ft/330 m) - stairs Trierweilerweg - Roman Bridge: about 3 hours. You will find a well-developed network of marked hiking and cycling trails in the Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Kyll, and Sûre valleys as well as in the forested heights of the Hunsrück and Eifel mountains.
