Day Trips

Trier is an ideal starting point for day excursions into the area of Mosel, Saar, Eifel and Hunsrück as well as to our European neighbors Luxembourg, Lorraine and Belgium.

Luxembourg - Echternach
Route: Trier - Remich - Luxembourg City (Bank district, European institutions, historic city center) - Muellerthal - Echternach - Igeler Saeule (Igel Column) - back to Trier.

Luxembourg - Viande
Route: Trier - Igeler Saeule (Igel Column) - Grevenmacher - Luxembourg City (bank district, European institutions, historic city center) - Diekirch - Vianden (historic downtown, castle, pump work) - back to Trier.

Upper Mosel - Saar
Route
: Trier - Igeler Säule (Igel Column) - Grevenmacher - Remich - Nennig (gladiator mosaic) - Saargau (with view of the Saar bow) - Mettlach (Keravision Villeroy & Boch) - Saarburg (historic city center, castle Saarburg) - Tawern (Roman temple) - back to Trier.

Volcanic Eifel Mountains
Thousands of years old, the lake-craters of Daun (Dauner Maare) are the only volcanic lakes in Europe.
Sights
: Himmerod Monastery - Manderscheid (castles, lakes) - Bad Bertrich (Glauber's salt pit) - back to Trier.

Nuerburgring, Burg Eltz and Mosel
Route
: Trier - Daun - tour of the Nuerburg race course - auto racing museum - Monreal - castle Burg Eltz - Cochem - back to Trier.

Romans along Mosel and Saar
Route:
Trier - Tawern (short walk to Roman temple district) - Saarburg (historic downtown) - Saargau - Roman villa Borg (reconstructed baths) - Nennig (gladiator mosaic) - Grevenmacher - Igeler Saeule (Igel Column) - back to Trier.

The Romantic Middle Mosel
Route
: Trier - Bernkastel-Kues (historic city center, wine museum, Cusanus House) - Traben-Trarbach - Cochem (castle Reichsburg, historic city center) - back to Trier.

Roman wine press and Roman villas along the Middle Mosel (Römische Weinstrasse)
A number of traces of Roman settlements have lately been found along the Middle Mosel, some have been reconstructed.
Sights: Villa Urbana (Longuich), Villa Rustica (Mehring), Roman castle Neumagen with wine ship, Roman wine press (Piesport), pilgrimage monastery Klausen.

Excursion into Hochwald mountains
This excursion takes you to the South-West Hunsrueck.
Sights: Kell am See, castle ruin Grimburg, Hunnenring (Celtic Ring Wall), Hermeskeil (aircraft exhibition) (April through October).

Erbeskopf - Idar-Oberstein and Nahe Valley
Route:
Trier - Erbeskopf (816 meters) - Idar-Oberstein: cutting-mill, gemstone museum, Chapel-in-the-Rocks - Fischbach (show mine, copper mining) - back to Trier.

Roofing slate mine, Fell and Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach
Route:
Trier - show mine in Fell - Saarburg - Orscholz (Saar bow) - Mettlach (Exhibition and "Keravision" of Villeroy & Boch) - back to Trier.

Lorraine and its Capital City Metz
Sights: Schengen ("Schengen Treaty"), Sierck-les-Bains (castle fortifications), Thionville, Metz (city tour, cathedral, Old City).

The Battlefields of Verdun
The region around the Lorraine city Verdun experienced one of the most horrible slaughters of WWI. A bus tour around the battlefield with the memorial cemetery and the charnel house of Douaumont demonstrates what madness war is capable of.
