Rostock Brewery

At the Rostock Brewery, visitors can watch the age-old process of beer-making - and test the results! Take barley, hops and water. An age-old recipe, which even centuries ago promised a favourite, light and sweet liquid: beer. And apart from a few technical refinements this recipe still applies today. How the cool pale liquid develops out of this mixture within four weeks, the skilled staff of the Rostock Brewery will be happy to reveal to you during a guided tour.

In this firm, rich in tradition, four Rostock master brewers today watch over the tried-and-tested procedure of the Hanseatic city. The first stage is the brewing room. The barley comes into the brewing room already dried and processed into malt. It is coarsely ground, cleaned and processed with water to make a mush. The brew is heated up and later is filtered and boiled in a giant vat with the hops. The cooled liquid eventually flows through a pipe into the fermenting cellar. Yeast is added and the fermentation begins. After a week the master brewers are already able to test the freshly brewed beer. It must mature before the crystal-clear drink passes through to the third and final stage: fully automated machinery fills and seals bottles and cans in a fraction of a second, 50,000 bottles alone in an hour. Guests can test the results on the spot.
