On the trail of the Hanseatic League

During the Middle Ages Rostock was one of the most important hanseatic towns. You will come across evidence of the architecture from this period and learn about some of the city's history.

Rostock – a city in fairytales, sagas and anecdotes
(max. 2 hours)
This is the guided city tour for children up to 12, making Rostock's history interesting and exciting for younger visitors too.

The tour of the city centre ends with a fascinating view down over the Hanseatic city on the water from the St. Petri church tower.

Along the city wall
(max. 2 hours)
We recommend a walk along the well preserved and restored city wall, which once offered Rostock’s inner-city life protection and security, from the Steintor gate to the St. Petri entrenchment. Guided tour of St. Petri church by request.

Thematic guide city tours:
Redbrick Gothic in tradition and the present
(max. 2 hours)
This typically North German form of architecture has gone down in history as redbrick Gothic. The brick however remains modern in Rostock up to the present day. You find redbrick buildings of medieval and later vintage at every turn in the city centre. Guided tour of St. Marien church by request and/or short visit to Zum Heiligen Kreuz convent.

Warnemünde between windward and lee
(max. 2 hours)
Windward and lee are not sailors’ Latin but terms from the world of shipping. Get to know the attractive seaside resort of Warnemünde, stories from the past and present and a proud sea breeze. Visit to local heritage museum or lighthouse ascent by request.

Pub crawl
(max. 2 hours, from 5 pm)
A crawl of another sort at the resort of Warnemünde or in Rostock city centre: you visit attractive, rare or worthwhile pubs and restaurants, try little delicacies and find out more about pub stories and city history.

Night-guard tour
(1,5 hourd from 8 p.m.)
At the St. Petri Church starts this guided tour through the eastern part of the Old Town. The night-watchmann is dressed in his standardized uniform and is letting you know more about historical anecdotes and the security rules of former times.

"The chocolate side of Rostock"
Architectural traces of the Hanseatic League, the brick stone gothic and the maritime flair of the city harbour are pieces of Rostock's chocolate side. At the end of the city tour a visit to the chocolate factory, wich is located next to the city harbour, is included in this city tour.

Chocolate seminar - tempering chocolate
(1,5 hours)
Rostock can offer more than just fish and beer. In the chocolate factory you can get an insight into the production of tablets, bars and candies.

Brewing - a culinary experience
(max. 2 hours, midday and evenings)
Stories about brewing beer in one of Rostock's brewery taverns. As well as drinking beer and eat beer dishes you can watch the brewing being done, from the brewing of the malted grain to the fermenting of the beer. 

Getting familiar in Warnemünde with the “fisherman and his wife”
The “fisherman and his wife” show you the resort of Warnemünde in historical costume. Get to know a very lively seaside resort, once a fishing village, and hear anecdotes in High and Low German. Visit to lighthouse or local heritage museum by request.
