Schweinfurt and the Schäfer Collections

With the Schäfer Collections, Schweinfurt has transformed itself from a town known for making ball bearings into an insider's tip on culture and museums.

The George Schäfer Museum is one of the most important private collections of 19th-century art from the German-speaking area. There are also temporary exhibitions and architecture by Volker Staab. The Otto Schäfer Library includes a book-printing museum, graphic art and also examples of arts and crafts. There are both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Municipal Collections are also well worthwhile. These include the Old Grammar School Museum, Old Imperial Bailiff's Gallery, the Gunnar-Wester-Haus Museum and the Biology Museum.

On a tour through early-industrialised Schweinfurt, you will see further evidence of Schweinfurt's history - the Town Hall with the Ruckert Memorial, the Church of St. John and the shot tower.

And last but not least there is the "Orginal Schweinfurt Schlachtschüssel" (a pork dish with sage and sauerkraut etc.), wine tasting on the Peterstirn and a boat journey on the river Main.
