The present fortifications, much esteemed for their pure neo-Classical architecture, were built by the Prussians between 1817 and 1828. The interior of the fortress houses a memorial to the German army, a youth hostel and the Regional Museum. The fortress can be reached by car, on foot or by chair-lift.
